The Rapper: Jay-Z

The Return: After turning his 2003 album, The Black Album, into a retirement party, Hova made his inevitable return to the game in 2006 by releasing the single, “Show Me What You Got” and the album, Kingdom Come, based on a comic book of the same name that featured an elderly Superman coming out of retirement to teach the next generation of superheroes.

The Reaction: Kingdom Come taught us that 30’s the new 20. Which is cool. Except that Jay was creeping up on 40 when he released it. So, basically…(*does math*)…Kingdom Come just made Jay sound really old. He’s recovered nicely, but consider this album the midlife crisis of Jay’s discography.
