Soccer Craze Takes Virginia With ASCO Tourney
Who ever said Americans don’t care about soccer?
While the 2010 World Cup is making the sport a round-the-clock attraction, stateside soccer heads in Northern Virginia can see live fútbol action at ASCO’s annual soccer tournament, Le Tournoi du 30 Juin, which begins July 2.
The tourney features 16 teams from ATL, Boston, New York, Raleigh, San Diego, Virginia and Washington, D.C. squaring off for the three-day competition. In celebration of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) independence, ASCO will honor special guests, including seven members of the Leopards World Cup Team (the first Black-African team to qualify for the World Cup) and African Championship team.
Aside from special guests, there will be a black-tie gala, museum and amusement park attractions, and a finale party. Over 3,000 guests are expected to attend the free event.
