“Live Your Life” (2008) –T.I. feat. Rihanna

For me “Live Your Life” was something I was going to do as a comedy sketch. The reason why that song became popular in America was because of that fat kid on YouTube yodeling. So I thought imagine how crazy it would be if we could take that yodeling and make a record out of it. It’s kind of the same way I came up with “Kingdom Come” for Jay, which was originally the theme music for my Myspace page. So “Live Your Life” was supposed to be a joke record, but as I started making the beat I started realizing that it could actually be something more. I started hearing the melody of the hook and the words started coming to me. I went in and wrote the hook and sang it.  And I had a keyboard player come in and play on it.

TIP just happened to call me the next day and was like, ‘Yo, I’m in New York for a day and I need something from you.’ I told him, ‘I might have just the record for you.’ I shot it over to him, he did his vocals right away and then the conversation turned to who we would get to sing the hook. It was either going to be Justin Timberlake or Rihanna. I knew either one would be great…but it would be nice to have a dynamic of male and a female vocal. And I knew since the record that was sampled was a very popular techno record in Europe, Rihanna was perfect because she’s huge in overseas. So we went for the double whammy and threw Rihanna on there [laughs].”

I knew it was the biggest hit of my career when someone called me from a farmer’s market in Guatemala and said that some grandma was sitting on the porch with a transistor radio and the record was on. I have no idea how much it has sold to date. But I know it was one of the biggest songs of that year.”
