Iconic? Black Women Channeling Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe. Her name so effortlessly speaks volumes. Not only was she Hollywood’s darling, she owned and boasted her curviness with the confidence of today’s, well… Beyoncé. Even as sexy as owning her womanly curves was, black women should stop idolizing the white Hollywood starlets of old (as if there aren’t any black icons to mirror or immortalize) and more toward Black lady icons, especially in features such as magazine covers and fashion spreads. I mean, we’ve got a gamut of Black icons to evoke: Diana Ross, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, Diahann Carroll and the list goes on.
Hey, no shade to the fabulously fashionable and iconic Audrey Hepburn, Jane Mansfield, Brigitte Bardot and, of course, Marilyn. But as Jay-Z says, “Why all the pretty icons always all white?”
