Who Got Next? The Top 5 Contenders for NBA Rookie of the Year
No need to translate Ricky Rubio’s ambition; it’s international. The Spanish basketball player was the youngest to play in the Spanish ACB League at the young age of 14. Although the Minnesota Timberwolves point guard was drafted to the N.B.A. in 2009, conflicts with his contract overseas prevented Rubio from stepping on to N.B.A. hardwood floors. He signed with the FC Barcelona league for a six-year deal but resolved terms with Minnesota in time for his rookie debut this season. His ability to pass with swag has made the T-Wolves an entertaining team to watch with his one-hand bounce and behind-the-back passes. Rubio ranks third in the league in assists behind Boston Celtics’ Rajon Rondo and Phoenix Suns’ Steve Nash. His on-court chemistry with summer 2011 draft pick Derrick Williams has resulted in notable game highlights, which only means “mas puntos” for Minnesota.
