10 Black Olympians Being Honored at London Subway Stops
As London prepares for the 2012 Summer Olympics, its subway systems are undergoing some interesting changes.
The Associated Press reports the British capital has changed the names of 361 stations to celebrate Olympic athletes. Sports fans can find their destination on London’s Olympic Legends Map and ride the rails directly to the Olympic Stadium.
Gold medal winners such as Jesse Owens, Michael Jordan, Venus Williams and more will have stops named after them to honor their accomplishments and celebrate the upcoming games.
“There were heated debates and a few late changes of heart, but we are happy with the result: dozens of nations represented, all 2012 Olympic sports accounted for, and Ali and Phelps, two of the greatest Olympians of all time, guarding the Stratford gateways to the games,” said map designers Alex Trickett and David Brooks.
Larry Bird, Mia Hamm, Ian Thrope and a host of other Olympic stars will be represented.
