Mimi Plange began her designer journey in 2007 with her line “Boudoir D’Huitres.” By Fall 2011, Ghanaian designer decided to change her line’s name to simply “Mimi Plange.”
She revealed her “Scarred Perfection” collection as a tribute to African tribal sacrifices. The collection featured dark vibrant hues, warrior inspired collars and tailored evening gowns.
For Spring 2012, Mimi became inspired by Asian traditional garments and Namibian tribal influences for her “A Flower in the Desert” collection. Some of her designs included soft-colored dresses, button-up shirtdresses, Kimono-styled blouses and garments with floral patterns as well as intricate embroideries. Also, Mimi embraced the colorblocking trend using pink, teal and orange to create a burst of energy.
The young designer was able to collaborate with sought after shoe designer Manolo Blahnik on footwear that matched her spring presentation. One shoe featured a leather sandal with a stiletto heel and fringe along the ankle dedicated to the Himba culture. The other shoe featured open-toe ankle boots embellished with beads dedicated to the Victorian style. Her relationship with the fame shoe designer continued with her Fall 2012 collection, where Mimi and Manolo created more footwear to match her impeccable clothing.
For her most recent collection, she took inspiration from surreal Nordic forests and Paludario’s art. Mock necks, ruffles, full skirts, velvets, gold brocade, bead work, wools dominated her Fall 2012 presentation, Labyrinth.
Mimi Plange’s designs have been spotted on celebrities like Alicia Keys, Estelle, Janelle Monae, Rihanna and Kat Graham. She always strives to create sportswear inspired by Victorian and African historical fashions.
