Erykah Badu Calls Controversial Video ‘Tasteless, Meaningless, Shock Motivated’
Over the weekend, some provocative visuals were dropped for Erykah Badu’s track “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.”
The ubersexy and un-edited video of her and her sister swimming in a tub of various erm…liquids was allegedly leaked by Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne without the singer’s approval, which struck a nerve and started a frenzy of furious tweets.
Though the Flaming Lips issued a statement to Pitchfork accepting all responsibility for releasing the visual, Badu wasn’t having it.
“I have not one need for publicity . I just love artistic dialogue,” Badu (@fatybella) responded in a long-winded tweet to @waynecoyne. “And just because an image is shocking does not make it art.”
“U disrespected me by releasing pics and rough vid on the internet without my approval… That is equivalent to putting out a security camera’s images of me changing in the fitting room,” she added.
“I never would have approved that tasteless, meaningless, shock motivated video,” Badu continued. “As a woman I feel violated and underestimated.”
And for good measure, she called Coyne an ass, concluding with, “These things have been said out of necessity.
And if you don’t like it, you can KiSS MY Glittery ASS. O and Nayrok told me to tell u to kiss her ass too .
Coyne didn’t keep quiet either, later tweeting, “Hey @fatbellybella I kissed it!!!! Thanks!!!!!!”, with this photo of himself. “Yessss!!! Nice ass!!!!”
The clip came off the Flaming Lips’ ‘Heady Fwends’ collaborations album. Safe to say all ties have been cut off after this fiasco.
