Venus Williams has not lost in the first round at Wimbledon since her very first appearance at the tournament in 1997. Unfortunately, she has met that fate once more as she was defeated by 79th ranked Elena Vesnina at the Wimbledon tournament in England.

At game start, it seemed as though Williams would come out victorious, but her opponent quickly gained momentum, which proved too much for Venus.

Last summer, Williams was diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder, Sjogren’s syndrome. The illness reduce has been known to reduce energy and could have been a factor in her loss. However, she did not cite it as a reason for her early defeat. “I did my best today. My opponent played well,” Venus told reporters.

Williams is now gearing up to compete in the Olympic Games next month.
