The Planet Hollywood-led action sequel brawled to the number one spot in the box office.

Lionsgate is extremely happy their male-driven sequel, The Expendables 2, took home an estimated $28.8 million domestic debut, yet should not that it brought in less money than its predecessor’s $34.8 million opening.

The sequel did fare better overseas, launching via Universal in just two markets, Italy and Russia, earning $9.9 million, roughly $45 higher than the first Expendables movie. Here in the States, Focus Features‘ stop-motion 3D toon ParaNorman debuted with a less-than-expected $14 million three-day gross. Sony hoped to fare a bit better against the action-adventure picture with their retro-musical film Sparkle, bringing in an estimated $12 million. Disney‘s midweek family entry The Odd Life of Timothy Green wasn’t even a blip on the radar, as it folded squarely in line with expectations, earning $10.9 million in three days.

The previous #1, The Bourne Legacy, dropped to second place and still held on better-than-expected. Down just 55%, the Jeremy Renner-led espionage-thriller took home $17 million rounding its total to $70 million.
