Be Aware: National Suicide Prevention Week
This week is the 38th annual National Suicide Prevention week, surrounding World Suicide Prevention day on September 10th. We are encouraged to participate in various activities across the U.S to raise awareness and shed more light on this issue that has been increasing rapidly since 2001. Here are some related facts.
• Suicide is the 4th leading cause of death among adults ages 18-65 in America
• Between 1980-1996 African American suicide rates have doubled between black men ages 15-19
• Firearms are used in more suicides than homicides
• Every 15 minutes, someone commits suicide, which equates to pprox.. 101 American deaths by suicide per day
Suicide is easily preventable. If you, or someone you know are having thoughts of taking your own life, seek help immediately, and in honor of National Suicide Prevention Week, if you see someone without a smile, give them yours, it may be the gesture that saves their life.
