Solange Knowles No Longer the Face of Carol’s Daughter

Solange Knowles is no longer the spokesperson for Carol’s Daughter.

In an interview with Lurve Magazine, she revealed that while she was a mouthpiece for the natural and transitioning arm of their hair care products, she had disagreements with the company’s messaging.

“I’m actually no longer a part of Carol’s Daughter, but throughout my entire time working with them, I was constantly fighting for the right message to be heard,” she told the publication. “The message that, the way we wear our hair is a personal choice, there’s no right or wrong way; one way doesn’t make us more intelligent, or more superficial, and every one makes that choice for very different reasons.”

The not-so-new natural had been battling with her role as a natural hair icon for a while, namely the criticism that came from the natural world itself. Earlier in the year, she took to Twitter to speak out against what she called the “natural hair police”:

“I’ve never painted myself as a team natural vice president. I don’t know the lingo and I don’t sleep with a satin cap…” she tweeted. “However, I did notice when I picked out my hair, I kept seeing feedback about needing a “twist out”. Connnnfesssioonnn: I HATE twist outs… I dont want to talk about no damn hair… mo.”

Now that the partnership has formally ended, maybe Solange can comb her hair in peace.–Stacy-Ann Ellis
