Are You Smoking Yourself Stupid?
If you didn’t have enough reasons to quit smoking already, a new one has just emerged from a study by researchers at Kings College London.
In a three-part examination conducted over more than a decade, almost 9,000 participants over the age of 50 performed cognitive thinking tests. Out of those involved in the analysis smokers scored lower than non-smokers.
Each group was asked to carry out brain-stimulating tasks like naming all the animals they could think of in a minute and learning new words. The people with lower scores were proven to be at a higher risk for heart attack and stroke.
Simon Ridley of Alzheimer’s Research UK told the BBC, “Research has repeatedly linked smoking and high blood pressure to a greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia, and this study adds further weight to that evidence.”
Yikes! Put those cancer sticks down!
