The Game calls his new hip-hop album, Jesus Piece, “art.” The Compton rapper spent a month and a half straight in the studio perfecting his fifth LP, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hip-Hop Albums chart this week, and No. 6 on the Top 200 chart.

“We try to be hard. We try to rap about drugs and guns in our lifestyle, but then we still put on a Jesus piece,” Game tells VIBE. “The first thing somebody says when they go get an award is “I want to thank God,” but haven’t been to church probably ever in their life or haven’t opened a bible and prayed.”

With a No. 1 debut on the hip-hop charts and mostly favorable reviews of the album, Game’s Jesus Piece prayers seem to have been answered. He sat down with VIBE to talk at length about the blood, sweat and tears that went into making his “best work” to date, including several of the LP’s collaborations.

“Really its like my everyday struggle with like music, and religion, and family and the streets,” Game told VIBE. “So, I just put it into one big pot and just mixed it in and tried to create the best album possible.”
