The names and ages of the 26 victims who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School on the morning of Dec. 15 at the psychotic rage of 20-year-old Adam Lanza were released today following medical examination. “I’ve been at this for a third of a century and my sensibility may not be the average man’s,” Connecticut Chief Medical Examiner H. Wayne Carver II told reporters, “but this is probably the worst I’ve seen.” Twenty children were killed, all aged 6 or 7, by multiple gunshot wounds. Twelve were girls and eight were boys. The six adults were all women. Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

“This is a very devastating set of injuries,” Carver said. “I believe everyone was hit more than once.” Carver performed seven autopsies and said the bodies of the children he examined had been shot between three and 11 times. Two were shot at close range, the others at a distance. All were shot by a single rifle. Another victim, Nancy Lanza, the mother of the shooter, was found dead at her home from a single gunshot to the face. She was 54. As more details emerge in the massacre’s aftermath, the heroic efforts of Sandy Hook teachers, particularly 27-year-old Victoria Soto are also coming to light. Soto, a first grade teacher at Sandy Hook gave her life protecting her students. She reportedly was found dead huddled over her students, protecting them from the gunman.
