Facebook Welcomes Its Oldest Living User

Facebook user Edythe Kirchmaier is adding a new milestone to the social network, and making thousands of friends in the process.

At the tender age of 105, Kirchmaier is registered as the oldest living user on the site. She also takes the crown as California’s oldest licensed driver and the University of Chicago’s oldest living former student, according to ABC News.

Medical aid charity Direct Relief set up her account to celebrate her centennial-and-then-some birthday, honoring her 40+ years of volunteer work at the organization.

Kirchmaier is so far enjoying the digital era, stating, “I’ve been contacted by such wonderful people and received such nice messages and pictures from people all over the world. I’m so humbled by all the interest in me.” She currently has more than 20,000 Facebook friends.

Among her “likes” include the University of Chicago, actress Jane Lynch, and, just like the rest of us, the Cheesecake Factory. However, don’t think the world of social media has changed the lady of the telegraph era. Every Tuesday she heads over to Direct Relief’s offices in Santa Barbara, Calif., to handwrite thank-you letters to the charity’s donors.
