George Zimmerman — the man responsible for gunning down Florida teen Trayvon Martin in 2012 and sparking a huge social movement — has been denied a delay of trial.

Zimmerman, who was on neighborhood watch duty at the time of the shooting, still alleges that he shot Martin in self-defense.

According to reports, Zimmerman’s defense team requested on Tuesday (Feb. 5) that the trial be moved from June to November, citing the prosecution’s delay in offering up evidence. But Judge Debra Nelson rebuffed the request to push back the case.

On Tuesday, Florida residents united at the Seminole County Courthouse and at the Goldsboro Welcome Center to celebrate what would have been Martin’s 18th birthday.

Zimmerman is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder.
