Director J.J. Abrams Talks ‘Star Wars Episode VII’
With the movie that everyone has been waiting for since forever finally in the works, our hope is that J.J. Abrams has his thinking cap on!
The Star Wars Episode VII is gearing up for its proper release in 2015, yet in a new interview with Empire, J.J. Abrams is giving fans a sneak peek into what he is planning. “There are infinitely more questions than answers right now,” Abrams said in the exclusive piece.
The filmmaker spoke about his approach to the upcoming Star Wars film, comparing it to his most recent (and appreciated) work with the classic Star Trek franchise. “I feel like I can identify a hunger for what I would want to see again and that is an incredibly exciting place to begin a project,” he added.
Funnily enough, while the role he nabbed would be considered a coveted one for any would-be filmmaker, Abrams said that he wasn’t initially sold on the idea of directing the new Star Wars flick. “My knee-jerk reaction was that I’m in the middle of working on the ‘Star Trek’ movie and I can’t even consider it,” he said. “But then time went by and I got further along working on the movie and getting to a place where I had done most of the heavy lifting.”
Before the announcement was formally made, Steven Spielberg was one of the early favorites for the film. Given his close working and personal relationship with Star Wars creator George Lucas, Spielberg quickly shot down the rumors, saying, “It’s not my genre. It’s my best friend George’s genre.”
The revamped space odyssey hasn’t announced its full cast, but fan favorites Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) are already in talks to join the fun.
Star Wars is set for release in 2015 while Abrams’ next Star Trek movie Star Trek Into Darkness will hit the silver screen on May 17th.
