Have you seen the gruesome injury that Louisville guard Kevin Ware suffered during the Cardinals’ NCAA Tournament game against Duke on Sunday night? If not, go watch it now. Or, better yet, don’t. It’s one of those things that you can’t un-see and, because of the horrific nature of the injury, CBS has already said that they will not air it at all going forward. Ware snapped his right leg in half on a relatively routine play and, well, it’s probably safe to say he won’t be back on the basketball court anytime soon.

Unfortunately, injuries like the one that Ware suffered against Duke are a part of sports. Some of them are completely unavoidable. Bones break, ankles twist, and ligaments tear simply because they’re used so often by athletes. And, other injuries happen as the result of big hits during games. But, regardless of why they take place, one thing is clear: They’re ugly and often painful to watch, no matter how many times we see them happen.
