Jackie Robinson Biopic ’42’ Rakes In $27.3 Million Opening Weekend

On Friday night (Apr. 12), the Jackie Robinson biopic 42 broke industry expectations.

According to USA Today, the movie grossed a whopping $27.3 million this weekend alone. The film–a $40 million production from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures–beating out the projected top contender Scary Movie 5, which hit theaters the same day.

42 earned an A+ Cinemascore grade and a thumbs-up from 75% of viewers on Rottentomatoes.com, trumping past baseball-based flicks like Moneyball and Trouble With The Curve, which brought in $6.7 and $4.2 million, respectively, on their opening days.
