Richie Havens Dies

Folk singer Richie Havens died Monday (April 22) at age 72, after suffering a heart attack.

The Brooklyn-born singer is most famous for opening up the famous Woodstock Festival in 1969, as the first performer to play during the three-day festival. He returned to Woodstock in 2009, for a 40th anniversary celebration.

Havens also performed at President Clinton’s inauguration in 1993. Before Richie Havens died, he underwent kidney surgery that had stopped him from performing.
