Jon Hopkins’ ‘Immunity’ Provides The Melodic Edge EDM Is Missing

One of the big gripes about dance music is that it’s all tracks, no songs. Well, British electronic musician Jon Hopkins is here to fix that. Like Neil Young or Nick Drake after a night at the disco, Hopkins’ electronic music is brilliantly minimal and deeply melodic. His new album, Immunity, sounds like his head is swimming in crepuscule dreams while his body’s still writhing to phantom rhythms. It’s a nice progression from his 2011 collaboration with folky crooner King Creosote, Diamond Mine, which also combined sharp acoustic songwriting and keen electronic production. The resulting mix on Immunity at times sounds a bit like the neo-romantic techno plied by Apparat, or Telefon Tel Aviv, wherein mellifluous vocals brush up against meticulously engineered beats in an extended serenade to the body electric. To experience Jon Hopkins live, keep an eye out for his upcoming gigs this spring and summer. He’ll be at Brooklyn’s Glasslands on June 4th with techno wonder kid SFV Acid, and at everyone’s favorite outdoor museum-curated disco, PS1’s Warm Up on August 31st with Chicago’s king of twisted techno Cajmere and noise rockers the Liars.

Immunity is out June 4th on Domino Records. Check the video for the title track, and listen to the Nosaj Thing remix for “Open Eye Signal” below.
