Gabrielle Union Challenges the Media’s Love for Latina Women in ‘Being Mary Jane’ [Trailer]
Being Mary Jane has been steadily gaining fans since its film festival debut last year.
BET’s new series describes leading actress Gabrielle Union as “a beautiful and successful TV news anchor with a lackluster love life who remains devoted to a family that doesn’t share her motivation.” Playing a proverbial Superwoman, Gabby’s character Mary Jane is a modern-day black woman put to the test of finding “the puzzle pieces that she–and society– insist are missing in her life.”
Written and directed by Salim and Mara Brock Akil (The Game), the show further questions color lines and race issues in the media, including the love of Latina women in comparison to negative coverage of black women.
The project premieres on July 2, 2013 at 10:30 p.m. EST to watch the pilot.
