Nelson Mandela Hospitalized for Severe Respiratory Infection
Anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was hospitalized early Saturday for a lung infection that had worsened days before. According to multiple sources, the South African hero’s health continues to deteriorate, due in part to a tuberculosis diagnosis during his 27-year prison sentence. Since news broke this morning, supporters have sent well wishes including Mac Maharaj, spokesperson for South African president Jacob Zuma.
“What I am told by doctors is that he is breathing on his own and I think that is a positive sign. Madiba [Mr Mandela's clan name] is a fighter and at his age, as long as he is fighting, he will be fine,” he said.
