Singer/actor/author Tyrese Gibson has mastered the art of versatility but his most important job? Being a father.

In a two-part interview for KFC and VIBETV’s Fresh Fathers campaign, the Fast & Furious star revealed his intimate thoughts on fatherhood, growing up in poverty and blockbuster success.

“That feeling of being stuck, broke and hungry and not getting out even when you wanted to became my determination and motivation to get out,” said the Watts, Calif. native.

The “Sweet Lady” singer delved further into his upbringing amongst three siblings under his mother’s care and how he strives to be an active father, despite his past experience.

“I think a lot of us as men, whether we know it or not, we have become duplicates of our fathers or lack thereof,” he says. “How can you naturally know how to be what you were never raised by? A lot of us may not have been raised by a father or mother or the right type…but it’s for you to break the cycle, go out there and say, ‘I’m just gonna figure it out.’

Tyrese also spoke on his motivation to succeed and how it affects his team. “I drive people that work with me crazy because my level of focus and drive is of a man that just got on,” said the industry vet, who also recently dropped a book with Rev Run called Manology. “It’s driving my team crazy but it’s one of those visions that drop down from the sky and it’s gotta happen.”
