The year was 1993, and good music reigned supreme. Whether it was for the bedroom, BBQ or cubicle, these songs made a lifelong impact. Nearly 20 years later, they still have a domineering presence. On this #ThrowbackThursday, we celebrate 20 years of VIBE with a roundup of 10 great songs from ’93.

Mary J. Blige – “Real Love”

The second single from Mary J. Blige’s debut album, What’s the 411? “Real Love” gave MJB a new title when she sprung on the scene: Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. Originally recorded in 1992, “Real Love” still made good noise in 1993 with the heavy drum sample from Audio Two’s track “Top Billin’,” becoming Blige’s first top-ten hit, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Blige’s second No. 1 hit on Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop Singles chart.
