Electronic Pop Singer Jessy Lanza to Release ‘Pull My Hair Back’

Until recently, Kode9’s Hyperdub label has been something of a post-dubstep boys club. The tree house got a nice shake with the addition of Laurel Halo last year, as well as Cooly G and others in recent years. This year, the roster will acquire an even more seductive voice with the release of Ontario singer Jessy Lanza’s debut LP, Pull My Hair Back. Co-produced by fellow Canadian Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys, the album is a masterful mix of electronic pop reminiscent of Sally Shapiro’s neo-Italo house and Inc.’s avant R&B. Lanza may be new to many ears, but the analog synth fan has been building a following in Canada, even playing at Mutek. She also recently provided guest vocals on Ikonika’s single Beach Mode. Cool, without being off-putting, and sensuous without being wanton, PMHB is a languorous listening experience that excels in the art of the tease, something fast becoming extinct on today’s in-your-face pop charts.

Below, check the video for “Kathy Lee”, shot in Lanza and Greenspan’s Ontario hometown, Hamilton. Pull My Hair Back is out September 10 on Hyperdub.
