Giveaway: Win Two Tickets To Peter Rosenberg’s Birthday Show Featuring Odd Future, Meek Mill, Schoolboy Q And More
Thank Mike Meyers for his portrayal of Wayne Campbell in the 1992 comedy classic Wayne’s World and controversial shock jock Howard Stern for Peter Rosenberg’s spin-off celebration now known as #Peterpalooza. What was originally a hip-hop show chock full of rap’s finest has become the HOT97 DJ’s personal pet project to bridge fans from different ends of the genre’s spectrum.
“The first thing that ever made me think about [putting together] was that Wayne (Campbell) had this concert called Waynestock,” Rosenberg tells VIBE. “He had a dream about all these acts like Aerosmith he could never get because he’s just a local cable access dude [but then] he has this concert and it turns out they all come.”
Rosenberg started the new tradition last summer at Hammerstein Ballroom inviting the wild cats of Odd Future and veteran lyricist Raekwon to usher in his birthday. Now, the out-spoken music guru is bringing back Tyler, the Creator and Co. along with MMG’s own Meek Mill and Top Dawg spitter Schoolboy Q for a hip-hop melting pot sure to turn Williamsburg Park in Brooklyn into Peterstock.
“I saw Howard Stern do these big events where artists would perform and shut down New York but the combination of those things made me want to do it. I also thought it was a good avenue for me to be in – putting on good hip-hop concerts since I see myself as someone who has good taste in hip-hop,” says the guy who made waves at 2012’s HOT 97 Summer Jam for slamming NIcki Minaj’s “Starships” and prompted the concert’s headliner to chuck the deuces at the last minute.
The two have since set aside their differences but don’t expect the Young Money rapstress to pop up at Peterpalooza this Satuday (July 20). “I’m gonna give her a year before I cash in a favor,” he says with a laugh. “We get along now. Let me not go too far.”
Far is a relative term given that Rosenberg hints at adding a female MC and even a pro wrestler to the bill. But at the end of the day, the radio host just wants to put on a stellar set that will have attendees leaving with more ear candy than what they came for.
“There are lots of festivals where you can see random people but there aren’t a lot of hip-hop shows where within that one show, you get so many different flavors of it,” he points out. “The common thread of this weekend is that it’s all fucking good shit and I think all the people that are coming for one person end up falling in love with someone new that day.
He adds, “I wanted to get fans from different fan bases to come out. It’s great that there’s so much good music out … but there’s still division in different kinds of hip-hop so I hope that the show can put that kind of shit to bed.”—Adelle Platon (@adelleplaton)
