Every year as the Jedi and Marvel costumes descend upon San Diego for the annual Comic Con convention, it means big news in the world of action figures, superheroes and the lot. And, Comic Con 2013 certainly dropped some big news on Saturday.

Warner Brothers announced that for its Man of Steel sequel, it would be uniting the Justice League’s most famous caped crusaders: Superman and Batman.

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder will reprise his role at the helm of the action flick and Superman actor Henry Cavill will also return for the sequel, which is set for a summer 2015 release.

To date, Man of Steel has earned $630 million worldwide. Christopher Nolan’s last Batman flick Dark Knight Rises has surpassed the $1 billion mark. Combining the two DC Comics forces will hopefully be Warner Brother’s answer to Marvel’s successful 2012 Avengers blockbuster, which raked in $1,511.8 billion worldwide and sits below James Cameron’s Titanic and Avatar on the top-grossing films of all-time list. It’s definitely a step in the right direction for the long-awaited Justice League film.

It is unknown, yet unlikely that Christian Bale will reprise his role as Batman. “It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another,” he told Entertainment Weekly of his Dark Knight role earlier this month. Man of Steel actors Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane are confirmed to reprise their roles for Superman and Batman film.

“I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter,” read a statement from Snyder. “Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Superheroes in the world.”

The world is safe again.
