During the Essence Music Festival (July 5), Billboard conducted an interview with Maxwell to discuss his blackSUMMERS’night album and the four-year hiatus he took since his previous record of a similar moniker. The “Fire We Make” collaborator with Alicia Keys also hinted at a duets compilation with his former labelmate.

“We’re definitely working on an EP that’s sort of Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrrell. We got a thing musically,” the “Pretty Wings” singer said.

When asked about the gap in between releasing albums, Maxwell said he decided to live life but the hiatus allows him “to always surprise people.”

This album, set for release late summer/early fall, might fulfill that unaware element as he said the sound of his fifth studio album “has that bittersweet feel to it. I don’t like things to be too happy. It’s when you go back to school, summer’s over then you kind of have that wonderful week where you get crazy. That’s what the essence of the record is.”
