MTV is looking to go into the scripted television space with the small screen adaptation of Scream, which was announced today at the network’s TCA session.

With the series moving forward, MTV announced that Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin will be the lead screenwriters behind the project. The pair worked together on CBS’s Criminal Minds, ABC’s Revenge, and NBC’s The Event.

The popular Wes Craven franchise followed the character of Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell), a high school student in the fictional town of Woodsboro, and the mysterious killer known as Ghostface.

The film was considered unique at the time of its release and grossed $173 million over a $15 million budget. MTV has picked up Faking It and Happyland, in addition to Scream. This is all in a part of the network’s broad-ranging investment in scripted television, which has been a huge success for them as of late.
