Trayvon Martin’s Friend, Rachel Jeantel, Offered Full College Scholarship
At a seemingly grim time in the Black community following the “not guilty” verdict delivered in the George Zimmerman case, Rachel Jeantel, Trayvon Martin’s friend and a key witness on the defense side in the trial, was offered a full-ride scholarship by radio legend Tom Joyner, BlackAmericaWeb.com reports.
Jeantel was heckled by audiences during her testimony mid-trial for her appearance, upbringing and speaking skills. Jurors—specifically Juror B37, who anonymously spoke about it on Anderson Cooper’s 360 show—felt that her “lack of education” made her a fickle witness.
She recently appeared on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight,” catching the attention of Joyner, who offered her the scholarship through his foundation, along with tutors to help her graduate and pass the SATs. “Hi Rachel, this is Tom Joyner, I love you, I really do love you”, he said to Jeantel, who responded, “I know.”
He added, “If you want to graduate from high school, and go to an HBCU, even if it’s not in Florida but especially Florida, like Florida Memorial, Edward Waters or FAMU, if you want to do that, I want to help you do that.”
