With Spike Lee kicking the Kickstarter’s campaign out to the world, Brooklyn’s favorite filmmaker is using the spotlight to educate fellow cinephiles.

Oldboy, which is Lee’s biggest movie to date, is wrapped, and his Kickstarter campaign has drummed up all sorts of hype. While we’re still waiting about School Daze 2, his follow-up will be “about blood and sex.”

This latest video finds the 40 Acres and a Mule impresario releasing a list of films to his NYU Graduate film class that he believes every filmmaker should see.

These “essential films” are must-see films if you haven’t yet, and we’re equally surprised by how many of the classics have not been viewed by those who want to make movies.

Sure, Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston, Akira Kurosawa and others are on the list, but what stood out to you? Have you seen them all? Do you agree with his list or not? Watch the clip and check out the list below.
