Actor Chadwick Boseman, who wowed audiences as Jackie Robinson in the film 42, is set to play James Brown in an upcoming biopic, Variety reports.

While the Universal and Imagine Entertainment’s film is still untitled, Tate Taylor (The Help) will hold down directing duties and produce alongside Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins and Mick Jagger and Victoria Pearman under Jagged Films.

The biopic will follow the Godfather of Soul’s “rise from extreme poverty in Georgia to becoming a world famous and highly influential R&B musician with a string of hits in the 1960s and ’70s including “Please, Please, Please,” “I Got You (I Feel Good),” “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” and many others.” The iconic singer passed away in 2006 at age 73.

Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes were initially attached to the project, as well as Spike Lee as director. Grazer has been working the film since 2001.

You can catch Boseman next in Summit’s NFL film Draft Day starring Kevin Costner.
