Listen: Miley Cyrus — ‘Wrecking Ball’
Miley Cyrus changes things up on her Bangerz second single, “Wrecking Ball.” Unlike “We Can’t Stop,” “Wrecking Ball” is more heartbreak anthem than party track.
“I came in like a wrecking ball/ I never hit so hard in love/ All I wanted was to break your wall,” she belts out. “All you ever did was break me/Yeah, you wreck me.” When she isn’t singing the big cathartic refrain, Cyrus’ voice seems influenced by Kate Bush’s octave-shifting singing style — going from meek and sheepish to opulent.
The lyrics also seem to take a page out of her own love life. The 20-year-old has been engaged to Liam Hemsworth since August of last year, but the two are seldom pictured together and reports of the couple hitting a rough patch have surfaced. “Don’t you ever say I just walked away/ I will always want you,” Cyrus continues on the track. “I can’t live a lie running for my life/ I will always want you.”
Bangerz, Cyrus’ fourth album, drops on Oct. 8.
