INTERVIEW: Adonis Stevenson Grounds The Cloud, Talks Detroit & Fight Music
“I’m proud, because I worked hard and I showed I can box,” Adonis Stevenson told reporters after his eighth round win over Tavoris Cloud. Before the champ celebrated his successful night, he told us all how it would go down. The 22-1 boxer successfully defended his WBC light heavyweight title Saturday night at the Bell Centre, which was televised on HBO, when he grounded the Cloud with a hefty barrage to his right eye. Since becoming the king of the mountain, Stevenson proved to naysayers that he had what it takes to be number one and deliver on-time. With Cloud dissipated and Bellew bellowing in the background (“I’m taking his belts home with me!”), the Kronk Gym trained warrior isn’t looking at any rest soon. The man nicknamed Superman, overwhelmed his opponent from the first bell with commanding force, which led to Cloud’s refusal to get off his stool at the start of the eighth round. You can catch the replay Tuesday, Oct. 1 (11:30 p.m.) on HBO2. The fight is also available on HBO ON DEMAND and HBO GO. Yet, before the Blainville, Quebec hitmaker stung Cloud with a stiff left that swelled his eyelid, Adonis Stevenson sat down with VIBE to share his feelings and expectations going into the fight. WARNING: Full conversation contains echoes.
Stevenson’s next fight is to be a mandatory defense against England’s Tony Bellew, likely to jump off early next year. What are your early predictions? Share them below.
