J.R. Smith Suspended For Drug Violation

New York Knicks’ guard J.R. Smith has been suspended from five games for reportedly violating the NBA’s anti-drug program, sources tell Yahoo! Sports. Smith was said to have tested positive for marijuana.

The 27-year-old player recently signed a three-year, $18 million contract extension in July. He also underwent knee surgery that left him out of commission for three to four months. He averaged a career-best 18.1 points a game for the Knicks last season.

This wouldn’t be his first suspension; Smith was suspended from seven games for his involvement in a 2009 car incident and 10 games in 2006 for his part in the Denver Nuggets-New York Knicks altercation.

The NBA is expected to formally announce his suspension Friday afternoon.
