Nina Davuluri Becomes First Miss America of Indian Descent
Last night, Nina Davuluri made history as she became the first woman of Indian descent to win the Miss America title. Originally from Fayetteville, NY, the 24-year old beauty will use her new platform to promote diversity, something last night’s audience had trouble grasping. Since winning the title, Davuluri has been the target of racist remarks from Internet users, who feel the brown skin beauty doesn’t represent America’s values.
Comments have ranged from “So Miss America is a terrorist,” to “Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11,” to “The liberal Miss America judges won’t say this- but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values.”
Despite the backlash, Davuluri remains in high spirits as she reports to Jersey Shore’s damaged Seaside Heights for her first Miss America duties.
“I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American,” she said in a news conference about the online hate.
