ESPN Films Explores The History Of The ABA
ESPN’s latest 30 for 30 documentary focuses on the ABA, the American Basketball Association that used to be healthy competition with the NBA. It harbored incredible talent like Julius Irving and George Gervin before the league broke up in 1976 and sent those players to the NBA on teams like the New York Nets, the Indiana Pacers, and the San Antonio Spurs.
One of the teams that didn’t make the switch successfully was the St. Louis Spirits, and in Daniel Forer’s film Free Spirits, ESPN got the full scoop on how a popular ABA team saw it’s steady rise and it’s steep fall. The whole thing is available to watch online, so peep game if you love basketball and it’s rich history.
