Tattooed Jesus Is Seriously Pissing Off Some Texans

New billboards depicting Jesus Christ with tattoos all over his body are really pissing off some people in Texas.

The signage, placed on some 60 placards throughout the city of Lubbock, shows the Lord’s Son wearing a crown of thorns and tatted in words like “addict” “outcast” and “jealous” with his arms spread open wide. The intention was to show that Jesus embraces and loves all types of people from outcasts to misfits, but for some conservatives it’s going too far.

The ad campaign was put together by grassroots Christian outreach group JesusTattoo.org. “The message is a simple one, Jesus’ love is transformative. He loves us unconditionally and no matter what you’ve been marked with, faith in Him and love for others will transform us,” said media relations coordinator for Jesus Tattoo Ashleigh Sawyer.

The campaign doesn’t stop at billboards. The JesusTattoo.org website takes things one step further with a video of Jesus playing the tattoo artist and tatting up his subjects in positive words like “brave” and “trust.” Meanwhile, the hateful words begin to appear on Jesus’ body.

“We’re finding that those who visit the website and watch the video come to understand the message of the campaign,” Sawyer said. “Certainly, like with all deeply personal relationships, not everyone approves of the image of Jesus with tattoos, but we welcome the controversy because we understand that a dialogue on the issue is the best way to spread the message.”

It is 2013, and an estimated 14% of Americans have a tattoo on their body, according to a StatisticsBrain poll. The question is not whether is it right or wrong, but, rather, is it blasphemous or smart evangelical marketing?
