In honor of this year’s stellar acting performances, The New York Times continues their short film series, thrusting actors into no more than 90 seconds of minimal dialogue that spans genres from film noir to Western visuals.

In an interview with Mashable, Kathy Ryan, The New York Times Magazine’s director of photography, said, “We asked 11 screenwriters or writing teams for one original line of dialogue. We then gave the lines to Janusz Kaminski, who created the concepts for the short films, one for each actor.”

Eleven short reels were created featuring The Butler actors Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, Fruitvale Station’s Michael B. Jordan, and 12 Years A Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor.
