‘SNL’: Kerry Washington Helps Address Black Comedienne Controversy (VIDEO)
Kerry Washington made her debut as host of Saturday Night Live this weekend and she didn’t disappoint. She also helped SNL address the recent scrutiny they’ve come under for not casting a black women on the sketch show since Maya Rudolph’s departure in 2007.
Washington kicked things off by playing Michelle Obama in the cold open, but soon realized she’s have to pull double duty and play Oprah in the same sketch. A message from SNL’s producers soon scrolled across the screen apologizing “for the number of black women” Washington would be asked to play throughout the evening. “We made these requests both because Ms. Washington is an actress of considerable range and talent and also because SNL does not currently have a black woman in the cast,” the message read.
“As for the latter reason, we agree that this is not an ideal situation and look forward to rectifying it in the hear future… unless, of course, we fall in love with another white guy,” the message continued. In an attempt to squash the controversy more, Al Sharpton made a cameo and said the famous kickoff words “Live From New York, it’s Saturday night.”
For her turn in the SNL hot seat, the expecting Scandal star played everyone from Michelle Obama to Oprah to Miss Uganda to a game show host to a ditzy teen on a MTV reality dating show. Washington also channeled her Scandal character Olivia Pope in the opening monologue, and turned the catchphrases of an annoying girlfriend into a hilarious “Gangnam Style”-inspired SNL digital short. While Eminem served as musical guest and performed his new tracks “Berzerk” and “Survival,” Washington proved to be the star of the night, holding her own and proving beyond any punchline that a woman of color could steal the SNL spotlight. (Still your move, SNL.)
“Thank you so much,” Washington said during her epilogue. “This has been the most amazing week.” Watch Washington’s turn on SNL in the videos below.
