Charlamagne Tha God Talks About How He Got His Name And His Sordid Past

Charlamagne Tha God is quickly becoming a household name since his recent interview with Kanye West went viral. He brings the shock factor in his Power 105.1 Breakfast Club interviews with his to-the-point questioning style and carefree attitude as to whether guests like him or not.

In an interview with the New York Times, Charlamagne sat on the other side of a Q&A, and revealed a few facts about himself, starting with his government name. The Guy Code cast member said his name is Lenard McKelvey, but his hip-hop alias, Charlamagne Tha God, came from his hustling days.

“I called myself Charles because I didn’t want the people who bought crack from me to know my real name. And then when I was in night school, I was reading in the history book about Charlemagne, which is French for Charles the Great.” He added “Tha God,” because it sounded cool and the spelling of Charlamagne instead of Charlemagne he has no answer to. “I think I just spelled it wrong.”

Charlamagne also revealed his sordid past during the sit-down. The radio host landed in jail a few times when he was younger, once for being involved in a shooting (no one was killed). “I was in the back seat of a car and a shooting happened, and so all of us ended up going to jail for it.” He later went to jail twice for possession of marijuana and cocaine with intent to distribute.
