Macklemore: Blackalicious Brought Me Closer To God
Macklemore is well aware of the power of music. After winning big at this year’s Grammy Awards, the Seattle-bred rapper is using his platform to inspire others who may be battling personal demons. As part of mtvU’s Half of Us campaign, the “Same Love” MC sheds light on the hip-hop that helped him get through his youth.
“Growing up listening to Blackalicious — the words of Gift of Gab really put me on a certain path,” he tells MTV in a new interview. “It brought me closer to God. What I didn’t get from church or what I didn’t get through organized religion, I got through music. I know that power.”
Mack has been open about his struggles with alcoholism, openly admitting his sobriety “since 2008″ in his song “Starting Over.”
He adds, “If I have a gift at any capacity with words and I don’t use that power, I’m not doing my job. You can call that a responsibility.”
Catch the full interview when it airs later tonight (Jan. 30) on mtvU.
