Rap Genius Will Come Up In Google Searches Again Now

Rap Genius found out the hard way : Don’t f%$k with Google.

The beloved website, dedicated to annotating and explaining rap lyrics, was blacklisted from Google’s search results page after linking to “unnatural links” through their “Rap Genius blog affiliate program.” This mutual site promotion tool, where a blog would promote Rap Genius pages in exchange for love from Rap Genius via Twitter and etc., cost them major page views through the Google SEO algorithm around the holidays. The website acknowledged that its link-building strategy spun out of control, and worked personally with Google to fix its shattered SEO rankings fast, a big deal when you are a website looking for page views.

Rap Genius released a lengthy explanation of what went wrong, how it was their fault, plus an apology. It said it spent the days since Google flagged them deleting all irrelevant links on their site, some 177,781 URLs that contained inbound links to Rap Genius.

“To Google and our fans: we’re sorry for being such morons,” Rap Genuis’ apology began. “We regret our foray into irrelevant unnatural linking. We’re focused on building the best site in the world for understanding lyrics, poetry, and prose and watching it naturally rise to the top of the search results.”

Remember, Big Brother is always watching.
