Marvel Studios Considering ‘Black Widow’ Standalone Film
With Captain America: The Winter Soldier creeping around the corner, many have been wondering if Marvel Studios would ever develop a film around Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow character.
Studio president Kevin Feige has not been shy about his love of the Black Widow character, saying back in 2010, “We’ve already started discussions with Scarlett about the idea of a solo movie and have begun putting together concepts, but ‘The Avengers’ comes first.”
Feige, recently chatting with Total Film magazine in a new interview, once again brought up the Black Widow now that The Winter Solder is scheduled to come out on April 4. “We wanted to change the dynamic of the cinematic universe with this film. We wanted Cap and really the entire cinematic universe to be very different at the end of ‘Winter Soldier’ than it is at the beginning,” he said.
For those who don’t know, Black Widow (Johannson) used to be a Russian spy who aligns herself with S.H.I.E.L.D. to help save the Earth in The Avengers. According to Cap (Chris Evans), Black Widow’s storyline in The Winter Soldier will find her “coming to terms with her history, that she’s been a spy, and spies aren’t necessarily trustworthy.”
The extent of her trustworthiness will be explored in detail in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which comes out in 2015. Film production is slated to begin in Johannesburg this March.
“Widow’s part in that (movie) is very big,” Feige said. “We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that. When we meet the Avengers at the top of ‘Age of Ultron,’ it’s a very different landscape than when we left them at the end of the first film. Partially, that’s because we love the rhythm that the comic books have developed — each of the characters appear in their runs, occasionally they get together for a big event or crossover series, they part again, and then they come back together again.”
It is not yet determined whether Marvel Studios will slate a Black Widow movie in its third phase of films, which so far includes Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and the third installments of The Avengers and Captain America.
