Orange Jumpsuits Too Trendy?
We all know Orange Is The New Black is all the rage, but are orange jumpsuits just as popular?
A Saginaw, Michigan sheriff seems to be convinced that they are. Sheriff William Federspiel believes that the Netflix hit has made orange jumpsuits cool and ultimately en vogue. So much so that he has assigned inmates at the Saginaw County Jail to switch over to old school black-and-white striped uniforms. By the end of the year, it is estimated that 513 inmates will have made the sartorial switch.
Sheriff Federspiel clams that lines between pop culture and prison culture are becoming blurred due to shows like Orange Is The New Black, according to Saginaw County News. He says dressing like an inmate has become a fad, “wearing all orange jumpsuits out at the mall or in public.”
The inmates aren’t taking to the change too well, and have criticized the new attire. Federspiel stated in its defense, “it’s not to be crass. We’re not trying to embarrass or shame them. It tells me something, though, when the inmates think that it’s bad: It’s probably good.”
Orange Is The New Black is definitely a popular show that gives levity to prison life, but for every bit of humor it provides, it also shows the depravity, pain and corruption the prison system offers. What do you think? Is Orange Is The New Black making prison culture pop culture?
