Vintage Vixen: Beverly Johnson
When you think of models who paved the runway, knockout beauty and model-cum-mogul, Beverly Johnson is queen of the catwalk. Forty years ago, Johnson broke barriers with her iconic American Vogue cover as the first African-American woman to grace the internationally-renowned fashion bible.
Beverly’s golden-brown skin, sultry, chestnut eyes and captivating smile earned her the highly-coveted spot, as well as three encore covers. We’ll toast to that!
And yet nearly a half century later, we still battle a lack of diversity in the fashion industry, aka fashion’s blind spot–minorities. Johnson told WWD, “Sometimes we live in this very elitist bubble called the fashion industry [and] we have become really oblivious to what’s going on in the world.”
Nevertheless, while we keep our fingers crossed for more brown gals strutting down the runway this upcoming Fashion Week we’ll celebrate the first black girl to do it big.
