Days after the fatal shooting of Missouri teen Mike Brown, news of a dead unarmed person at the hands of the police has surfaced.

KTLA reports that LAPD officials fatally shot 24-year-old Ezell Ford in the Florence district of Los Angeles on Monday night (Aug. 11). Police were in the area because of reports of a nearby shooting and stopped Ford for questioning, but proceeded to open fire on Ford after “a struggle ensued,” according to a statement.

Ford underwent surgery but later died. Ezell’s mother, Tritobia Ford said her son was lying on the ground and complying with the officers’ commands at the time he was shot.

The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division is currently investigating Ford’s death.
