Say Uncle: Television’s 7 Greatest Uncles

By: VIXEN / October 8, 2014

When it comes to uncles, forget about it. Uncles are a mixed bag and we’ve seen all kinds. Crazy Uncle, Drunk Uncle, Drifter Uncle who shows up every few years in need of a warm bed. So many more. Mustache Uncle.

Uncles are sometimes fathers, too, but only to their own. Unless things got complicated—like pops was a double agent murdered by assassins—in which case one was fathered by sweet Uncle Ben in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens. For nieces and nephews, uncles are the middle ground; somewhere between dad and a friend. As in life, uncles have held a prominent place in television. And their depictions have been as weird and complex as they’ve been endearing.

Here are some of the greatest uncles to hit any TV storyline.

Uncle Junior on Jamie Foxx Show

Uncle Junior, The Jamie Foxx Show
Jamie’s troublesome uncle was always up to something. He was truly old-school, loved sharing stories and talking about his glory days. Uncle Junior owned the hotel where Jamie worked and was one of the most beloved characters on the show, which aired from 1996-2001. Here he is with his cast of misfits, crooning a la The Temptations.

Uncle Jesse on Full House

Uncle Jesse, Full House
If you’re of a certain age, you simply cannot fathom a cooler and more caring uncle than Jesse Katsopolis. The short of it: After his sister passed away, Jesse moved in to help his brother-in-law, Danny Tanner, raise the kids. Only expecting to be there a stint, he ended up staying forever, providing support and a lot of laughs. He also kissed a bunch of girls, which is pretty characteristic of uncles. In the first season alone, Uncle Jesse dated more honies than many will in their lifetime.

Aside from being a musician, radio host, and avid motorcycle driver, he also cooked a serious fried chicken and had impeccable hair. By the second season of Full House, though, Uncle Jesse settles down, marries, and has kids of his own. But he doesn’t move out. Instead, he remains, always making himself available to offer his nieces help and a kind or reassuring word.
